This tiny place, a short walk from Upper Street on an Islington backstreet, is where bar-wizard Tony Conigliaro first came to widespread prominence. Conigliaro has a laboratory upstairs, producing unique cocktail ingredients which find their way into the drinks here and at his other venues.
Not only Ryan Chetiyawardana has chucked out the frozen water, he also employs no citrus, sugar, fruit or other perishables, and next to no branded products. You can’t order off menu, and there’s only one of each colour of wine and one lager.
Even if you can only stretch to a single drink, it’s worth it: count out every last penny and treat yourself. The cocktail menu is stuffed with peerless examples of all the originals, but for the true Connaught experience the only way to travel is on the martini trolley – order one and it will be wheeled up beside you, with the drink mixed on top.
From the masterminds behind the Experimental Cocktail Club, Joyeux Bordel – literally meaning ‘happy brothel’, but used in France to mean ‘happy mess’ – is a great hangout for music lovers. Expect to drink simple yet delicious French-inspired cocktails while listening to soul, funk and disco vinyl records on an authentic vintage sound system.

A bit of a tight squeeze when busy with an up-for-it after-work crowd, the L-shaped bar area is overseen by a team of established and experienced bartenders whose drinks are made quickly and competently with no small amount of smiley showboating.
