Palazzo Barbieri is a neoclassical building designed by the engineer Giuseppe Barbieri, who was also the author of the Monumental Cemetery. The construction began in 1836 and was completed in 1848. During the Austrian occupation, the building, which was named Gran Guardia Nuova, was used mainly for military purposes, placing the headquarters of the Imperial Royal Command of the City Fortress. Palazzo Barbieri opens its doors to citizens with guided tours, the tour route (with reservations required) allows to deepen the history of Piazza Bra and Palazzo Barbieri, in particular of Sala Arazzi.
