Standford University is a private university in the United States of America located in California, in Santa Clara County, approximately 60 kilometers south of San Francisco. This university opened its doors in 1891, after six years of planning, by the will of benefactors Jane and Leland Stanford. The motto of Stanford University, chosen by President Jordan, is "Die Luft der Freiheit weht", a quote from Ulrich von Hutten which, translated from German, means "The air of freedom blows".
