The Church of San Giovanni Evangelista was built in the 5th century AD. by the Empress Galla Placidia to fulfill a vow expressed during a storm at sea following the death of her brother Honorius, while returning from Constantinople to Ravenna for the installation of her son Valentinian III on the Western throne.
