Park Güell

Parco Barcellona, Spagna

The lovely Park Güell

The Park Güell is a public park system composed of gardens and architectonic elements located on Carmel Hill in La Salut, a neighborhood in the Gràcia district. With urbanization in mind, Eusebi Güell assigned the design of the park to Antoni Gaudí; he understood better than any of his contemporaries the meaning of Gaudí’s architecture, the relationship between the two men was not merely that of an artist and his patron, but a real story of friendship. The park was built between 1900 and 1914 and was officially opened as a public park in 1926. In 1984, UNESCO declared the park a World Heritage Site.

In Güell's lifetime, the park was already considered to be one of Barcelona’s attractions, and the vast square was often let for staging Catalanist events. Güell wanted to recreate the British residential parks, which is why he named it Park Güell, in English. Gaudí respected the vegetation that was already growing on the property, and when new species had to be introduced, he opted for Mediterranean ones that did not demand much water. He also designed various systems for collecting and storing water, based on the irrigation systems he had learned about in the rural setting of his youth.
