The city of Bagan formerly known as Pagan, was the former capital of several ancient kingdoms in Burma. It is located in the country's dry central plains on the east bank of the Irrawaddy River, 145 kilometers southwest of Mandalay. UNESCO has tried unsuccessfully to nominate Bagan as a World Heritage Site.
