The famous street built to grant the Papal escape, connecting the Vatican with Castel Sant'Angelo. You can visit it by appointment only.
In 1494 the Passetto allowed Pope Alexander VI (Rodrigo Borgia) to take refuge in the Castle during the invasion of Rome militia of Charles VIII of France. In 1527 Pope Clement VII (Giulio de 'Medici) also escaped, thanks to this road, during the Sack of Rome carried out by the mercenaries of Charles V.
