A World Heritage Site by UNESCO Cusco

Cusco (in Quechua Qusqu), is a city in Peru, located at 3399 meters above sea level, the capital of the region of the same name. The original toponym of the city was Qosqo or Qusqu , which traditionally means center, navel, belt. For this reason the city was and is called the navel of the world (understood as the universe). It is located in the southern sierra of the country, and has about 300,000 inhabitants. Cusco was declared a World Heritage Site in 1983 by UNESCO.
