Place de la Bastille is one of the most famous symbols of Paris. It is an historic place. In fact there began the French Revolution, the mother of all future battles for freedom.
With bloody battles the insurrectionists motions conqured and destructed the Bastille. This action gave the name to the homonymous square. Today about the fortress there are only some rests of the Liberty Tower, because the others parts have been sold as souvenirs or as parts of Pont de la Concorde. At the center of the square you can admire the 40-meters-high Columns of Juillet, where the golden bronze statue of the Genius of Liberty rests on the top. It represents the ideal in which the Parisians have fought. The square is sadly famous, because for a short time it was the scene of executions for dozens of civilians put on the guillotine.
