Es Cap de Barbaria Lighthouse

Lighthouse Formentera, Spain

A lighthouse with an extraordinary view from the cliffs overlooking the sea Es Cap de Barbaria Lighthouse

Cap de Barbaria, so called by the inhabitants because of the sad memory of the pirate ships that reached Formentera from this sea crossing, is an extensive plateau which reaches an altitude of about 100 meters above sea level and is the most southerly point on the island. This place, almost devoid of vegetation, hosts important archaeological finds of the Bronze Age that are easily accessible for hikers, as they are located in the vicinity of the main road. In many areas of this agricultural area still does not arrive electricity. The lack of light pollution and the exceptional purity of the air permit to contemplate a beautiful starry sky. In this place composed mainly by rocks, the tourists usually have a dual perception: solitude and freedom.

Cap de Barbaria is surely worth a visit for the characteristic lunar landscape that is located at the sides of the narrow road that leads to the lighthouse. From the cliff to the east you can see a magnificent view of the beach of Migjorn and the promontory of La Mola, whereas to the west you can enjoy breathtaking sunsets of rare beauty. It is difficult to distinguish the spot where the sea begins and the sky ends; together are tinged with reddish tones forming the horizon. Surely a striking and curious thing, not to be missed, is the natural cave located near the lighthouse. Watching the sea, this big hole in the ground is situated on the right of the lighthouse, and unfortunately it is not indicated by any sign and therefore is not easily locatable. Through a convenient wooden ladder placed in the opening, as you can see in the photo, you can descend into the darkness of the cave and go out on a natural terrace overlooking the sea and then enjoy a breathtaking view if you do not suffer from vertigo.
