Cala Saona

Beach Formentera, Spain

Red cliffs and turquoise water Cala Saona

In the small bay of Cala Saona, there is only a very small stretch of sand among the steep cliffs which dominate the west of the island. The cozy beach here is surrounded by forests and low dunes and in the background, a large hotel blends nicely into the landscape.

Cala Saona can be reached from the harbor town of La Savina in a quarter of an hour by car or scooter. The car park is not far from the beach and a wooden pathway leads from it past the hotel and over the dunes into the vast area of soft sand. On one side of the beach is a row of quaint wooden boot houses. In summer Cala Saona is very full and not just with tourists from the local hotel. There is a very family-friendly atmosphere at this beach. As on most other beaches of the island, the sea is crystal clear and very shallow and shimmers in turquoise and blue shades. There are plenty sun-loungers and parasols here, together with a diving school, and conditions are perfect for snorkeling. At the southern end of Cala Saona is a small, cozy chiringuito, situated slightly higher up on the cliffs. There on the small terrace you can enjoy a mojito with the great views. At the other end of the beach you will find a larger restaurant with a covered terrace where you can have local dishes at typical prices. Cala Saona faces west and it is worth coming here in the evening to watch the sun setting over the sea.
